If you plan on volunteering in a particular field of medicine, we can arrange to place you in a relevant department of the Ghanaian hospital, to ensure that you receive maximum experience and help in your chosen field. Health care service providers in Ghana often work with limited resources and offer services to low-income populations at a minimal cost so local health professionals appreciate your presence and the extra pair of hands to assist them.
Volunteer work may include providing education about basic health and nutrition, physical therapy activities and stretching, organizing and offering companionship. A key contribution of any volunteer in this type of placement is cultural exchange. This may mean exchanging ideas and life experiences. Some of the specialist areas are described below.
Nursing:
For example, if your interest is nursing, we have a number of departments who would appreciate your help. This is an excellent opportunity to gain valuable experience in your field in a different culture where practices may differ considerably to what you're used to.
Optometry:
If you're planning on going into Optometry, there are a number hospitals that have an opticians department where they conduct eye tests. Here you will be able to observe and assist. The Optical section serves patients with prescribed frame and lenses.
Dentistry:
Most dental departmental hospitals are equipped with fairly modern dental Chairs, dental X-ray Units, etc. which caters for all dental needs of their patients.
This will be an excellent opportunity to gain a valuable experience in your field in a different culture where practices may differ considerably from what you are used to in your home country.
