


In Africa, many nations have at least recognized basic human rights for all
citizens, though in practice these are not always recognized. Extensive human rights abuses still occur in several parts of Africa, often under the oversight of the state. The situation of human rights in Africa and for that
matter Ghana is generally reported to be poor, and it is seen as an area of grave concern according to the UN, and non-governmental observers.
The Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative is an international and independent body which seeks to provide monitoring and rights to citizens of Africa. The organization’s office is based in Ghana, Accra and is dedicated to promoting and protecting human rights. Through cutting-edge research, education, and advocacy, the organization saves lives, fights injustice, restores peace, and builds the human rights movement around the world. Their areas of activities include; Rule of Law, Access to Justice, Respect of the Constitution, Police Accountability, Children's Rights, Women's Rights and Right to Information.
The organization deals with issues of reproductive rights (harmful traditional practices such as female circumcision), issues of rape, child trafficking, assault, unlawful detention and eviction Etc. It carries out its work by means of investigation, research, training, publications and capacity building. It collaborates with governments, inter-governmental organizations, academics, students and civil society. It aims to apply human rights to social change initiatives, advancement and improvement of human rights. The courts in Ghana however, ensure a culture of respect for the rights and obligations of all people in Ghana, dispensing and promoting justice in a free, informal, formal and relatively expeditious manner, ensuring fairness, efficiency, transparency and application of best practices.
Duties and Qualifications of volunteer interns;
The duties include but not limited to the following, Assist attorneys in and out of court, assist attorney staff collecting, reviewing and assembling data for presentation to support cases, receipt of complaints bordering on human rights, monitoring and raising issues of human rights in the news media, research on issues of human rights and rule of law. Etc Volunteer Interns are required to have good oral and written communication skills in English. Strong Interest in law and advocacy.

Location of Programs: Various locations in Accra and other parts of Ghana
Arrival Airport: Kotoka international airport, Accra (airport code ACC)
Working Hours: Flexible; Monday to Friday approximately 30 hours per week, all other times are free
Getting to the project: Dependent on location, 30 minutes to 1 hour multi-people taxi ride or commercial bus transporter (budget approximately US $10 per week)
