This additional information page is just a summary of some necessary information you need to know about the program and related issues. We will later provide you with more detailed pre departure literature materials as well as the management team of Dream Ghana when you are about set to come to Ghana.
Ghana is a fascinating country and, by West Africa standards, it is popular with travelers. Dream Ghana provides an important connection to the culture, social, economic and political events in the country by hosting you in a friendly family house (Home Stay) as well as provide literature about every thing you need to know about Ghana. By being Dream Ghana volunteer/intern however, you will gain an experience that you simply wouldn't get as a mere traveler without organizational guidance. By interacting with a local family, and going to work each day on whichever type of placement you have chosen, you will become an integral part of the community.
"Culture Shock"
Is a general term that is used to describe the difficulties many people face adjusting to a culture and environment that is very different to their own. It affects different people in different ways, and is impossible to predict.
Like all other destination countries, the culture in Ghana is different to what you're used to. For example, the people are exceptionally friendly and helpful, with big smiles and a relaxed attitude.
Night life
In Accra and other major centers, there are nightclubs with Western popular music and Afro beat. Concerts can be seen at the National Theatre in Accra. The School of Performing Arts, University of Ghana, Legon often hosts drama, poetry and cultural dancing shows. Foreign and Ghanaian films can be seen at the Ghana Film Theatre and Executive Film Houses across the country.
Shopping
Almost all commodities, including luxury items, can be found in the shops and markets. Artefacts from the all over the country in Ghana can be bought along with attractive handmade gold and silver jewellery. Modern and old African art is also available (although prices are high), Earthenware pots, leatherwork, locally woven shirts and Bolgatanga baskets woven from multicolored raffia are sold in all the markets. Ghana is home to the traditional Kente cloth. Shopping tours can also be organized by the Ministry of Tourism
Free Time
During your volunteer/internship experience, you’ll enjoy plenty of free time to relax, reflect, and explore the community. Free time is available some afternoons, most evenings, and every weekend. This time is yours to get to know the community and people in your own way. You’ll enjoy the local markets, historic places of interest, Internet cafes and more. Our local staff can give you suggestions for places to visit, or you can create your own agenda. During your weekends, you can take excursions to other parts of the country.
